Being Human Gets SOLID GOLD

Those Syfy guys got good taste in music

Syfy’s Being Human just threw me for a curve. When Solid Gold‘s “Who You Gonna Run to” played on their fourth episode, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice (If We Were Human)”, I remember thinking to myself, no fucking way.

I’ve been a BIG Solid Gold fan for the past year now and I couldn’t have been more happy for them. I love when films & shows throw in some good music and Solid Gold is […]

Atmosphere & Shaq, Be the Match Commercial

"See how big you can be." Join the bone marrow registry

Saw this on TV and instantly knew I’d heard this before. About one or two seconds later I knew it was Atmosphere. Googled “Be The Match Shaq commercial” and found out this was “Puppets” – never been good with names.

Enjoy and make sure to join the bone marrow registry.

Gorillaz Split Up… and Now Back Together!

Hopefully, just for holiday.

As far as reports go, Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett, creators of Gorillaz, were bickering about each other’s dedication to the band. Jamie complained about Damon’s involvement with other projects and Damon about Jamie’s “party lifestyle”. Whatever the reasons may be, Gorillaz are on an extened vacation for now (euphemisms always help ease the pain). As saddened as I was when I heard the news, I tried to look at what they’ve given us.

Not only have the two created three groundbreaking albums, along with many side projects, they’ve also ushered in a new genre/sub-genre/style (whatever you wanna call it). I haven’t been the biggest Alt Rock fan over the past years, but Gorillaz and the few groups like them have helped me find a place to start in the clusterfuck of a sub-genre.

To honor my favorite cartoon band, here’s a mini memorial featuring a few of my favorites from each of their albums. Hit me up with your Gorillaz favorites in the comments below.

Pretty Lights Unreleased 2010 Remixes

- - - - - - - - Let Your Light Shine Down - - - - - - - -

Last week Pretty Lights Music announced the creation of their new label’s website, featuring Paper Diamond, Break Science & Michal Menert as the label’s first signed acts. As if that’s not enough, now PL music is releasing seven never before released remixes, appropriately named Pretty Lights Unreleased 2010 Remixes.

The seven set of songs consist of a range of genres, but where the set shines is in the classic rock remixes. Pink Floyd’s “Time” & Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle” get straight electrofied to a new millennium vibe. The rest is still an amazing set to rage to – with Derek Vincent Smith, ya can never really go wrong.

If you’d like to grab all seven songs fo free, head over to the Pretty Lights’ download section on their […]

Coyote Kisses’ Anthem HARD RMX

Fuck Kanye, now this shit is as Hard as a Motherfucker!

I gotta admit what initially attracted me to this song was Coyote Kisses’ promoter, Abigail, who I thought produced it at the time. It’s hard to come by good female producers, if any, and a track like this with a female behind it would’ve been so damn sexy!

But after some digging around, I found the track was done by the male dominated duo, Coyote Kisses. I may have been a little let down at first, but after getting into their music, it could’ve been composed by a damn donkey for all I cared.

Since then I’ve listened to a handful of their work, but their Anthem still hits the hardest – although their other shit still blows me away. It isn’t just some dirty dubstep beat with overly coiled industrial grinds […]

Minnesota Nice by Atmosphere

featuring Prof (Stophouse), Mr. Gene Poole & Felipe Cuauhtli

Here’s a nice new track to kick off Atmo’s Welcome to Minnesota tour.

“Minnesota Nice” features a few fresh MC’s, including Prof (Stophouse), Mr. Gene Poole & Felipe Cuauhtli, but somewhat lacks anything new from Slug and Ant. It does go well with their recent work, which has a been a nice step along the years, but I’m eagerly awaiting what’s next. It’s still nice to hear the love for MN and is a good start to a healthy Rhymesayers year.

Make sure to hit up the mini tour if you’re around the area – plus, you may just see me out there (and wouldn’t that be sweet)

Lord Echo’s Melodies

New Zealand Reggae chilled for the cold winter

Quick, come up with 3 countries you think would be most likely to produce 2010’s chillest album. Was New Zealand on your list Didn’t think so, but it’s time to change that.

Lord Echo is the solo moniker of New Zealander, Mike Fabulous, a veteran of the Wellington music scene and member of the reggae band The Black Seeds. Melodies is his first solo release, and damn has he nailed it. He has taken a full complement of synthesizers, keyboards, guitars, basses, and horns, provided by both himself and a variety of other Wellington musicians, and crafted a masterpiece which blends reggae, dub, soul, afro, disco, funk, and […]

Jurassic 5 vs Opiuo – Taco Influence (Mashup)

A glitch hop goodie with J5's "The Influence" tearing up the track

Damn does this glitch hop hit. The intro is a good buildup for the glitch glory to come. J5’s original may have been one of a few dozen J5 classics, but the remix gives this shit edge.

I’m still not quite sure who cut this up, but I’m well on my way to finding out. Until then enjoy this anonymous party poppin’ piece.

“We verbally vibrate your track.”

It’s Kind of a Funny Story – Soundtrack Highlights

with Blue Scholars, The XX, Queen, Bowie, Red Man & Method Man!

While watching It’s Kind of a Funny Story, I ran across quite a decent soundtrack.

The initial song that caught me was The XX’s “Intro”. At the time, however, I recognized it as a Blue Scholars track I had heard a few months prior and forgot it was a remix. I’ll I could remember was how well Geo glided across this beat. So I Shazam’d it, Google’d “The XX Blue Scholars”, and BAM, I found Blue Scholars’ “Lumiere”.

After that a few other interesting tracks popped up, including Method Man & Redman’s “Da Rockwilder” and Queen & Bowie’s classic […]

Hungry Ghost by Starfucker (+music video)

with Watts in the House!

Caught this video in a Starfucker post and damn does it make “Hungry Ghost” that much better. Props to Flooded Films for this one.

I’ve been listening to Starfucker’s upcoming album, Reptilians, for a few weeks now. There are a grip of tracks that are quite becoming, but like all Starfucker music, it takes some time to get use to. As progressive or experimental as you’d call it, their music has a kind of habituation curve. But once you get familiar with the new sound, you realize the ingenuity in their instrumentals and the beauty in their entangled vocals. There’s no doubt I’m a Starfucker fanatic and Reptilians is slowly becoming another addiction.

Lookout for a slightly more thoughtful look on Reptilians sometime soon.
