Of course we had to hear some cuts from Chiddy’s Guinness World Record for the longest freestyle rap, coming in at 9 hours, 18 minutes & 22 seconds. I kept up with it for the last half and there were definitely many of those Chiddy witty one liners. Someone should make a damn story out of all those rhymes! ;)
It’s good to see that Chiddy Bang is swellin’ to Status. Can’t wait to hear what’ll be on Peanut Butter & Swelly, which releases this Friday (the 27th) – especially what Xaphoon has in store for us!

I’ve been posting waayyy too much Chiddy Bang over the past month. I feel like I’ve dedicated a blog to them… hint, hint (it’s in the works). But they are too damn good to pass up. With their EP, The Preview, just around the corner, Chiddy’s droppin’ some fine remixes to get the word out.
Their remix of New Zealand’s chart topping “Young Blood”, originally by The Naked & Famous, goes so damn well with Chiddy’s style, especially with Alisa Xayalith’s backup vocals. When I posted “The Good Life” a couple days back, I wasn’t expecting to listen to The Preview just a few days later. I had no idea at the time that the Australian release was set for October 1.

Chiddy Bang’s first single off their upcoming EP dropped just over two weeks ago. I’ve had some time with the “The Good Life” and it’s definitely a good show at what’s to come.
I really think Chiddy Bang has serious potential at making it big. First off, they are signed under Parlophone Records, which houses some great acts, including Gorillaz, Radiohead and The Chemical Brothers, just to name a few. This dude totally stole my idea!… and just about a few million others. I’ve always wanted to remix classic works. But it’s all about pulling it off, something I haven’t done… yet, and Wolfgang Gartner has done just that. Throughout the piece I get a little lost at times, but I quickly catch up – he seems to stray from the original a little too much for my liking.
Bassnectar introduced me to this dubstep, electro, house-type music. I’m really starting to dig the glitchy reverberations that I’ve never really heard before. I’m still fairly new to the genre/various sub-genres, but it sure makes for good workout music.
Anyone got some suggestions on good workout music

We just had our one year anniversary on the 3rd, so we decided to take a trip to Chicago and check out the North Coast festival. We’ll cover the festivities in the next post, but first we wanted to talk about the theme song for that week.
Chiddy Bang wasn’t at the festival, but I finally got my hands on their mixtape, Air Swell. The mixtape was put together to promote themselves throughout the UK. Nuttin’ But Stringz was nuttin’ like I expected. About a year or two back, someone had posted up on a forum about a rap duo who played violins. I love when hip-hop brings on classic instrumentals; strings just sound so good with a baseline and an MC that can flow.
Unfortunately, the duo didn’t stack up as I had hoped. Their use of the violin is definitely their strong point, but anything past that just seemed second-rate. Fortunately, I managed to pull a song that’s good for a party mix, which I didn’t expect from a group that’s highlighted for their violin playing – let’s just say I expected more of a classical vibe.
The duo seems to be leaning towards pop – just saw them on Dancing with the Stars (on a YouTube clip) – but their talent for the strings will hopefully push them back into the art sometime in the future.

I wonder what people from past generations would think of music nowadays I don’t mean lyrically, but the actual sound. Take Pretty Lights for example – Derek Vincent Smith’s use of traditional instruments are only a small portion of his entire sound set.
Smith’s use of untraditional beats has set him, and many other electronic musicians, apart from conventional music. His newest album, Spilling Over Every Side, the second EP of his 2010 trilogy, is a step in a new direction, although not a leap forward from his previous work. The most noticeable difference is each song’s length, topping at close to nine minutes on “High School Art Class”. I’m not sure I prefer the lengthiness, but as he points out, there’s a “sort of dimension flip” occurring in each song.
In a document included with Spilling Over Every Side, Smith points out that he’s tried to incorporate different genres into his work, “transitioning between something pretty and organic to something heavy and electro”. Although this may be true, I don’t see Smith pushing forward and building from his previous work – it’s more of a side step. I’m sure if I was out hitting up one of his shows, this would be some awe-inspiring shit, but I expect his albums to be on the highest levels, only because I respect his craft so much.
Despite all my criticisms, it’s still phenomenally fresh, especially compared to countless other electronic albums I’ve heard over the past few months. I’ve been a big fan of his for a while, and with this latest addition, Pretty Lights continues to impress meh.
