A-Trak · Like The Dance Floor (Remix)

Bishiclet & Super Fuzzy makin' this mix super fresh

More recently I’ve been looking deeper into the remixes I post and comparing them with their originals. The reason is because I started getting quite a few remix submissions that sounded great, but really didn’t do anything drastically different from its original.

In Bishiclet & Super Fuzzy’s remix of ‘Like The Dance Floor,’ the two take the best part of A-Trak’s single, the chorus, speeds ’em up and pushes out one easy-going, fun-loving reinterpretation – far different than its original. Trust me, this versions is much more satisfying.

Jessie Ware · What You Won’t Do For Love

This is just about the right blending of everything

I’m still quite stricken by how well music has been progressing these last few years. If you can’t see (or hear) what’s going on creatively around the world, you’re not exploring it enough. It’s out there, in all forms. Jessie’s ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’ is the latest distinction I’ve come across. It feels like she’s singing straight to me and isn’t that what music’s about. And who did this beat woofta.

Who’s Going to the SF MusicTech Summit, 2013?

... this guy. And a few of my favorites from 2012.

SF MusicTech is by far my favorite tech education account on SoundCloud right now. Even though I usually don’t take the time to go through too many sounds over an hour on SC, with this many good talks it’s worth a break from music for a bit.

Fortunately, for 2013 I’ll be attending my first summit in San Fran this Tuesday (the 19th). If you’re already going, let me know! I’ll be the 17-year-old lookin kid tryin to figure out what the hell he’s going to write about (I’m sure there will be a lot).

Vicktor Taiwò · Kiss You (One Direction Cover)

Makin' One teeny-bop group sound soulful as shit

We may just have the sexiest shit of 2013 right here and it just so happens to be a One Direction cover… and I’m okay with that. Vicktor Taiwò runs soul circles around these One Direction lyrics and tops it off nice with a little hypnotic vocal distortion – love it, when done right. I should really make up a mix of One Direction spin-offs, that’d be one sexy mix.

Mutemath · In No Time (Pierce Fulton Remix)

Love music that'll make you reflect

God Pierce really pulls the magic from Paul Meany’s voice. This Mutemath remix has all the bells & whistles you usually find in a Pierce Fulton bit, electro-weirdness & all, but these Mutemath vocals really top it off best. Love a song that makes you reflect (I should make a mix of them all, someone please remind me).

I, Aeronaut · Everything

Downtempo loveliness

I, Aeronaut is a pleasant change of pace from all the disco-electro we’ve been raving about lately. ‘Everything’ is a no frills, downtempo relaxation, but carries a calm, emotional melody to keep your attention. Once again, however, some vocals may have done another instrumental track some good (easier said than done, though).

2012’s Most Promising Musicians

Guaranteed at least one goodie or your money back

We’re finally getting our favorite musicians of 2012 out there. Remixes & heavy sampling have made up most of the other best music of 2012, but the rest of these are all originals (at least for the most part).

I also decided to change it from 2012’s best musicians to the most promising. They may be our favorite musicians of 2012, but they’re probably all new to you – except Frank, Madeon & Miike maybe.

Also remember, not every one of these may be your favorite style, but you’ll definitely find a few you’ll enjoy for a good while.

Maribou State · Scarlett Groove

Giving Winter that "crisp Spring morning" feel

Last year if you had asked me which country was home to the most quality and innovative producers, without hesitation I would have said France.  In the past few months, however, it’s clear that either my alliances have shifted or the UK is on FIRE with their creative and talented producers.

Maribou State is the latest UK production duo I’ve stumbled upon and whenever I try to listen to something else, they find their way back into my playlist.  Genre-wise, they go by “ambient” or “future garage”, but genre has become such a fluid idea with electronic music that they really can’t be classified. Every instrument and sound in this song is isolated in such a way, that each time you listen you hear something new.  The vocalist, Saint Savior, gives the song a driving purpose and and the light percussive beats give the song a light and airy feel.  It’s a pretty easy song to fall in love with, so don’t fight it, just let it happen.

2012’s Future Soul Music

Covering the future of R&B & disco with a lil' funk rolled in

Soul music is back with a whole new influence. Just two years ago I couldn’t find a half decent disco track, let alone anything funk or R&B. So like I do best, I filtered the shit out of the web and found me some good ol’, new-fashioned Soul music. This new style of Soul, however, isn’t like before, there are all sorts of electronic influences grown in. So let’s take a look at my Soul obsessions of 2012 and see what’s in store for the future.
