BURN DISCO · Build House

The playlist war between music services continue

Last year we showed our condolences for the day disco died at Comiskey Park in 1979, but with the burning of disco came the rise of house music. More than any other genre, I’ve gotten criticism for my love of disco house, but that’ll never diminish my love for it. If anything, I like it a little more.

We’ve decided to turn that playlist, BURN DISCO, into something more ongoing and inclusive. We’ve been collecting disco playlists since 2012 and before. From Frisco Disco to Lazer Disco to Horizontal Disco and Disco is to Dance, we’ve wrapped them up into one until we break them in two again.

BURN DISCO is on the four major music services, but as explained better in the previous article, not all music services are made equal. Especially in catalog. YouTube and SoundCloud have a much more expansive catalog than Spotify and Apple, which BURN DISCO exemplifies. Spotify and Apple only have about half the songs YouTube and SoundCloud do and it’s only going to get worse with the next playlist.

Special shout out to Flamingosis and his flamboyance. Y’all keep disco alive.

House + Heartbreak

· · · · Dance it off · · · ·

This is our third year celebrating anti-Valentine’s day 2015 | 2016. We didn’t plan on doing one this year, but the house we have is always soulful, which at least half the time is about heartbreak. There were so many classics stored up we had to throw this together.

We also got another house head to whip up her own. Lauren helped me with the first heartbreak playlist about hip hop and has created her own list for house, a few of which I so badly wanted to steal for myself.

Frisco Disco

Disco in the House

We haven’t had a proper disco list on here for years, but our groovewit & tits held us over last year. For our first list this year, we bring the best disco for dancing.

Frisco Disco came from a producer’s name I misread at first, Frico Disco, but I’m sure I’ve heard it somewhere else before. I gotta give it to 95 Royale for introducing us to this style of disco house – disco pop vocals with a heavy house kick – and after more than three years we finally got all the best of it together.

Disco is having another revival. Here’s out toast to it.

Treasure Island 2015

The two performers I wanted to see sucked, otherwise awesome!

I went to Treasure Island Music Festival this year to see two performers. I’ve been a fan of Viceroy’s productions since 2012 and was amazed by deadmau5’s live “4D projection” in London around the same time. Unfortunately my expectations were high, which usually doesn’t lead to good things.

A few days before the festival I got a promo email from deadmau5’s team giving us pointers on what we should cover with his TI set. The one thing that caught my eye was letting us know that

deadmau5 is not a DJ. He is and should be referred to as an electronic musician or electronic music performer.

Deadmau5 in’t a DJ. Sure, technically. Funny thing is the day before I read an article on some all about the buzz music blog that deadmau5 got rated one of the worst DJ’s of this year (second behind David Guetta). I think most people consider any live performance by an electronic producer as DJing. And his performance was dated. […]

Outside Lands 2015, best one yet

From Odesza’s set to meeting Toro y Moi

Outside Lands begins my favorite time of the year. It’s good weather in San Francisco, except in Golden Gate Park where it’s held, and there are plenty of fun things right around the corner. Treasure Island Music Festival, Beyond Wonderland & SF MusicTech to name three.

This year’s lineup for OSL is looking to be one of its best. I’ve compiled 12 of my favorites, not including Elton, D’Angelo, St. Vincent, Leon Bridges & Toro y Moi. Their SoundCloud presence is lacking and 8tracks doesn’t give us enough numbers to give a damn about dat.

Below the playlist we have two highlights from the festival, Odesza’s set and meeting Toro y Moi.

Madelyn Grant

How could you not want to work with this woman

The first time I ran into Madelyn Grant’s name was on Odesza’s Sun Models. I had recently uploaded the track to SoundCloud and she had contacted me about including her name in the title. The only reason I hadn’t in the first place was because they really chopped and skewed her vocals, making her voice barely recognizable. But she was real nice about it and it seemed more than fair.

About two months later and I see Madelyn Grant on FKJ’s Waiting. I didn’t remember she was on Odesza’s track at first, but once I did I was all the more in love. Madelyn has a breathtaking voice, but even better she knows how to use it – a much bigger problem with most vocalists.

Since then Madelyn has collaborated with a favorite of mine, Emancipator. I asked her how she got to collaborate with all these legitimate producers and she said, I sent them my demos.

That’s it. In Odesza’s case they were requesting female vocalists, but the other two she just sent them a sample. That’s all it took. How the fuck does that happen? Oh wait, that doesn’t. Minus with Madelyn.

I’ve put together a playlist of my favorite songs of her’s as well as another list for producers she should also send her music to. Although, this time I think they should be doing the reaching out.

Relax in the House

House music to relax to in yo House

Relax in the House is even chiller to dance to than our Horizontal Disco list, but both can also be used for relaxing too. This however lays off the lyricists and goes for deep, melodic, four on the floor kind of music with short vocal cuts.

If you don’t like house though, I’m not sure you’ll want to chill in your house with this.

Lazer Disco

I love lazer!

Another style of house we made up. I freakin’ love lasers! I first remember it in ghetto funk, but it makes its appearance all over electro funk, house and everywhere electronic.

If it’s not clear off the bat what I mean by lazer, just think the synth sound and blow it out to extravagant proportions. Something like our glam fucks. Really pierces the ears.

It’s bold. It’s fresh. It’s the best music to dance to right now – it’s rooted in disco for god’s sake.

Horizontal Disco

Lighter than deep house, chiller than trop

We first found the horizontal disco name on Zimmer’s Galapagos. And although we categorized Galapagos under the tropical house playlist, Zimmer’s sound definitely circles around the theme we’re going for here. Malinchak, however, is the exact sound we think of.

Horizontal disco is meant for late night discoing on the floor and is on the lighter side of deep house. I just like relaxing to it late night though.

Music of the Year, 2014

Listened to way too much music this year

I’ve listened to way too much music this year, probably around 12,000 new tracks (I tried calculating it). Most of the music was.. unfinished, to say the least, but we found a lot more songs worth keeping than any year before it.

A lot of new music emerged or reemerged over the year. Deep house was the big thing, but many discredit it because of the hype. It had its bad with its good. Our favorite new style goes to what doesn’t seem to have an official name yet. I’ve heard many call it kawaii, but I prefer vapor – this naming shit is more important than you’d think.

We’ve got 30 songs to show off, 11 artists and 20 playlists for you, but if that’s not enough… wait ’til next year.
