SoundKlout 9 : Minnesota

The future of Bass Music

Going through Minnesota’s dubstep music, you start to see the progress in his work over the last year. His latest EP, Ancient Machines, puts Minnesota’s music on a whole ‘nother level. It kind of reminds me The Beatles, their first few hits were catchy, but it’s only ’til their later work does a whole new style of music emerge. I’m not saying he’s doing for dubstep what The Beatles did for rock, but he’s well on his way.

SoundKlout 3 : Hooky

If you like dubstep, you'll love this guy

I gotta warn you, if you don’t like dubstep, this probably isn’t for you. I completely understand why people don’t like it, I’m not quite sure why I do. However, it’s one of the most experimental genres & anything that forward-thinking, at leasts get my attention.

Hooky is a little different than the dubstep I usually listen to. For the most part I listen to dubstep remixes, I find a lot of regular dubstep to be frivolous with no real aim, but remixes tend to focus on the original tune… or should! However, Hooky has created a lot of his own work that I very much appreciate and, although I’m sure it takes a certain crowd, is worth checking out.

Rollz · Plugged In (Bassnectar Remix)

Just a liiiil' taste for what's to come...

I may get into a little trouble for this, but I couldn’t sit on it any longer. I’ve been listening to Bassnectar’s upcoming album, Divergent Spectrum, for just around a week and it’s fuck.ing goood. I’m not gonna get into the whole thing quite yet, but damn does his remix of “Plugged In” screeeeeaaamm. Actually reminds me of my recent post on Minnesota, where I talk about dubstep lacking in “catchy melodies”. Not only does this catch, but a grip of others do too in quite different ways – especially the melodic dubstep towards the end.

Minnesota ·· Ancient Machines

'cause even Bass Music needs some catch.

Ancient Machines has something seldom seen in dubstep, a catchy melody. As far as bass music goes, it’s right after having a killer drop, but isn’t all that focused on, at least from what I’ve heard. Minnesota, however, has kept up his melodic tunes in his latest release, Ancient Machines, with three tracks that got a catch with a little finesse – especially “Breathe”.. but best drop goes to “Hold Up”.

So hit up the SoundCloud player below and buy ’em if ya like ’em (fair asking price too).

Kreayshawn vs Flux Pavilion · Gucci Can’t Stop

To kickoff DOSVEC's Dubstep Mixtape

Kicking off DOSVEC’s upcoming dubstep // mashup mixtape, DIFF – set to release late next month – we’ve got a swagged-out mashup of Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” and Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop”. This shit hits from the top and swags to the bottom with a grimey mix of the two.

The only issue I’ve got with the mashup is it uses the censored version of Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci”. So if you listenin in Kreayshawn, hit us up with the uncensored so we can get this shit straight proper.

DCarls ·· Flavorhythm EP

I can't believe this kid is only 19...

Not a real fan of the first track, but from there it’s nothin but glitchy goodness. DCarls’ Flavorhythm EP is a smooth blend of glitch hop, dubstep and straight up shit to rage to. Unlike a lot of the dubstep I’ve been digging around in, Dcarls puts a catch to his electro-finesse without losing that grimey dubstep nonsense we’ve all some of us have grown to love.

Can’t wait for more from this dude and the Simplify Recordings, big tings.

Minnesota · Sun Burst

with a possible EP on the way.

Not enough dubstep touches on the highs, but thankfully Minnesota provides us with just that. “Sun Burst” is a bass driven set with what sounds like bowl hitting bumps along the way. My favorite thang, however, goes to those electro-guitar sounding licks that play throughout – they complement the bass so well.

Side note, Minnesota put up cover art for something soon to come on his Facebook (also pictured above), Ancient Machines – anyone know what that is EP possibly

ill.Gates & Dov Bring the Score-Worthy Drumstep

A bass growling drumstep remix of Greg Rieve's (T.O.B.) "Decoy"

This is why I got into dubstep.. or drumstep.. or whatever you wanna call it. It’s all about pushing what we perceive as music and bringing on new & never before heard sounds.

ill.Gates & Dov’s remix of Greg Rieve’s (T.O.B.) “Decoy” takes in heavy bass growls as its carrier, but touches on high atmospheric scores worthy of a sick soundtrack – maybe something for the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie

DeathStar ·· Ultraviolet Halo

MartyParty & Minnesota go Future Bass

DeathStar consists of the two electro-talents, MartyParty & Minnesota. Their first hit, remixing Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, was featured on our Rompin Remixes of “Rolling in the Deep” compilation and started the mood off right with their Future Bass sound. Now the two have put out a new Ep, ULTRAVIOLET HALO, which brings a few classics forward and continues that futuristic shyt.

Most notable of the tracks, DeathStar remixes Wiz Khalifia’s “On My Level”. Not really a Khalifia fan, but damn is this hypnotizing, plus there’s a few dirty electro-bursts to boot. But as good as it is, the top pick goes to “Funk Soul” with fat drops from the Slimboy […]

Would You Consider Skrillex Brostep?

+ New Skrillex EP's: Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites and My Name is Skrillex

I’ve been on Turntable for the last few days, which is the main reason for my lack of recent posts (obsessed). The reason I bring it up is because when I was DJing in the “Dubstep” room, a lot of ’em brought up the term “brostep”, which I had no idea what it meant at the time. After listening to Skrillex’s two new EP’s, My Name is Skrillex and Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP, I think I understand what they meant.

I’m not trying to label Skrillex’s music as brostep, but I’m starting to see where the term applies. Brostep simply means dubstep without soul (as I found). Some believe it incorporates samples, mainly from hip-hop, but this is where I tend to disagree. Brostep, in my definition, would be dubstep with no real focus, which throws in gaudy none sense for affect… or simply lacks soul […]
