The 1st edition of A Stoner’s Guide on Beats to Blaze to, featuring mostly hip hop, was a major failure, so I thought fuck the second edition… well, up until StumbleUpon got a hold of it about six months back. Apparently, there’s a whole lotta stoners on StumbleUpon because the traffic from there has been majority flowing in since.
So in tribute, I decided to start it back up and go from a hip-hop theme to an even trippier one. Now, all of these aren’t technically “trip hop” tracks, but they’re somewhere in that mix. So check out a handful of my finest, awe-inspiring electronica to smoke out to. I’ll also include a few albums from various genres if we get enough traction (ie. you share it with yo friends).
[audio:Nectar-For-Isis.mp3|titles=Nectar For Isis]VICEROOOOY, my favorite nudisco remixer is back at it with a poptastic remake of St. Lucia’s “Closer Than This.” And as much as I’ll be blasting it for days, I can’t wait to see more originals from this dude, he’s got the talent and has already proved it.

The mashups are something different, bringing these MC’s into a few new styles, but only half really catch my ear. But make sure to check out the whole EP and see for yourself.
[audio:Cudder-One-Down.mp3|titles=A Cudder One Down (DJ 21azy Mashup)]Theo’s lightin up SNG with some flashy artwork and a ‘Big Spender’ sampled track, also featuring ASAP Rocky. Samples sped up and doused with bass to make it one bump for your ride, but this ain’t the main appeal, it’s that Theophilus flow.
Not enough emcees form their flow to the beat like London + switch it up every song to keep his vocals sounding fresh. Every time I hear a new track of his, it’s like hearing him for the first time. Rare form, my man.
[audio:Big-Spender.mp3|titles=Big Spender (feat. ASAP Rocky)]And we’re back! Moved to San Fran, so I had to take a few days off (didn’t prepare ahead). We’ve got some interesting projects on the way, but until then we’ll be throwing out some soulful singles for ya – first up, an ode to graffiti.
We featured Piece of Mind about a month back with their ‘Rap Phenomenon‘ single and now we’ve got another of their latest. ‘Graffiti’ starts off with a sample of some old dude who doesn’t seem to understand graffiti… typical. Then we transition into G Roc Gayle’s raps about why graffiti is so important to our culture with a few short samples of The Pharcyde’s ‘Passing Me By.’
I like what G Roc does with his vocal cuts on the track, which ride along well with Dj Gedsi’s beat. Get a few more MC’s on here and this could shape up to be Toronto’s next big underground hip-hop collective.
[soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/41960174" params="player_type=tiny&font=Arial&color=292929" height="18"]I was sure as hell certain that this was a remix from the first time I listened to it. The vocals seemed too damn familiar, like an R&B track from the late 90’s, but there was no indication that this wasn’t their work. But every time I listened to it, I just knew it wasn’t. So thanks to Google, I finally found out that this is in fact a remix of Wayne Wonder’s “No Letting Go” … and now I feel like a jackass for not knowing that.
Too many SoundClouders don’t put down the proper information for a track they post. For whatever reason, copyright or otherwise, it gets to be a pain in the ass for people like me to hunt down the information, let alone even know it’s a remix. To be fair, it’s not that hard to ask or figure it out, but why make it more complicated than it has to be…
[audio:Got-Somebody.mp3|titles=Got Somebody]A nu-disco Trak with Kimbra & Mark Foster on backups, now that’s a get together. I haven’t heard much from Kimbra before, minus her song with Gotye, but she really shines with that fresh A-trak beat. She’s got a hint of pop flavor, but with a sass that doesn’t sound as manufactured as, say, Katy Perry. Plus, that Foster support isn’t hurting her cause.
[audio:Warrior.mp3|titles=Warrior]My first thought when I heard this, without seeing the title, was that it would be perfect for a lazy sunday. But there’s no way I’m waiting ’til Sunday to release this smooooooooth tune, so just make it a lazy day whatever one it is. I’d also love to hear some smooth West Coast rhymes over it, but I doubt I could find any worthy … I’m way too picky when it comes to MC’s (and so should you!)
[soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/40500920" params="player_type=tiny&font=Arial&color=292929" height="18"]ChrisB.’s Lush EP is a two-setter with some strange electro (to say the least) that I love listenin’ to. The two tracks are a crisp of the strangeness, but ‘What’s a Half Step Among Friends,’ steals it… and not just because of those Timbaland samples!
[soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/41318444" params="player_type=tiny&font=Arial&color=292929" height="18"]Ok, so I love me some hard electro, and Apashe certainly delivers (along with pretty much everyone else from Montreal based Kannibalen Records). Apashe, a Belgian artist, began his production career making ‘breakcore’ tracks. I’m not sure what exactly breakcore is, but that’s what he calls it. Anyway, he recently moved to Montreal and switched things up, producing his own breed of electro-dusbtep […]
