Beyond Wonderland 2013

A trip without tripping, that's the plan.

Last year I heard Insomniac was taking its Wonderland festival and bringing it to The Bay. The thing I remember most when looking into Beyond was that Insomniac was trying to create a festival so visually & audibly stimulating there was no need to rely on ecstasy or LSD. As you can imagine, I was pretty eager to find out how well they pulled it off both personally as well as for other attendees. And as much as I can’t speak for them, though some of the pictures can, I will speak a little on my own account.

Visually, everything was pretty enchanting my two nights there, but during the day the drabness of the Shoreline Amphitheater seeped through. Much of the crowd was dressed in full fantasy and really made the scene more than anything. But where as the visuals were decent, the music faltered.

Some of the night acts, namely Zeds Dead & WhiteNoize, were a helluva time, but the music that played most of the day can best be described by one song, the dirty bit version of ‘Time’ by The Black Eyed Peas. In other words, once the beat dropped everything went to shit […]

Best Music of 2011 (Part 5) : Electronica

with a dash of dubstep sprinkled on because we love that bass face

Other than the Mixes & Mashes, 2011 was the year of Electro Music here on SNG. It all started out through our transition with hip-hop. I remember thinking to myself that we needed more uptempo, dance type music. A year later and the majority of the site is just that. As much as we need to hop back on the hip-hop wagon, this electro ride has been one of our favorites!

Dubstep Remixes of Video Game Classics

Reviving old-school Nintendo & Sega games in the dubstep arena

Inspired by our Dubstep Remixes of Rock Classics, this time around we’re taking our favorite 80’s & 90’s video games and coiling the shit out of ’em with style. It originally started out as just general remixes of video game themes, but after compiling the majority of them, it turned out to be mainly dubstep. Unfortunately, that led to a few good remixes getting cut for now, most notably a favorite hip-hop Mario mashup of mine.

I tried my darndest to get the most memorable classics – such as Zelda, Sonic, Mario and a few other noteworthy – but couldn’t manage to find quality ones for a few. There are just so many damn dubstep remixes out there and most of ’em are complete shit – it’s one of the fastest emerging genres, so there’s bound to be a lot of people hoppin’ on the bandwagon. However, I did manage to come up with 8 solid remixes, so help us come up with the rest and I’ll make sure to give up some cool prizes!! First off, “Hip-Hop Remixes of Video Game Classics”.

Sonic The Hedgehog · Green Hill Zone (Hooky RMX)

I gotta find more classic game tunes ELECTROfied like this.

Niiiiice one, Hooky! Always thought you’d do well with a classic game remix, for some reason I always hear traces of it in your music, and you haven’t disappointed this time ’round. Not only did you pick such a classic tune from Sonic, but this bass music rides the original tempo just right.

Now I gots to find more classic game remixes that contend with this. Suggestions

Drome · Sunshine (Hooky Remix)

A ray of hope for that bastard stepchild, dubstep

Hooky’s remix of “Sunshine” is a ray of hope for that bastard stepchild of a genre, dubstep. Dubstep always does well with high-pitched vocals such as these, but Hooky brings a rustic-step that reverbs off the eardrums nicely.

If you’re still not use to “music” like this, get to – it’s the future of dance.

SoundKlout 3 : Hooky

If you like dubstep, you'll love this guy

I gotta warn you, if you don’t like dubstep, this probably isn’t for you. I completely understand why people don’t like it, I’m not quite sure why I do. However, it’s one of the most experimental genres & anything that forward-thinking, at leasts get my attention.

Hooky is a little different than the dubstep I usually listen to. For the most part I listen to dubstep remixes, I find a lot of regular dubstep to be frivolous with no real aim, but remixes tend to focus on the original tune… or should! However, Hooky has created a lot of his own work that I very much appreciate and, although I’m sure it takes a certain crowd, is worth checking out.

Hooky · R K’d

Important! wait for the second drop...

First thing that popped in my head when listening to Hooky’s newest track, “R K’d”, was right before the build up, the “pops” sounded so much like Mario jumping straight outta Super Mario Bros. 2 (specifically that one for some reason). Then shortly after (well, it was a bit longer), I realized that “R K’d” is “arcade” – I’m a little slow, I know.

But other than that dumb witted thought, “R K’d” is another fresh dubstep mind melter from the Hookster. My favorite track from his will probably always be his remix of “Make You Pop”, it really solified my appreciation for dubstep, but it’s nice to know he doesn’t always have to rely on remixes and, more importantly, he can actually pull off something on his own.

Edit: shot Hooky an email about the Mario thang and he made the sound all on his own (damn!)
More importantly, as “Dan the man” pointed out, wait for the second drop – one of the best I’ve heard in a while.

Peg Leg by Hooky

A Dubstep Before Christmas

Once I heard Hooky’s remix of “Make You Pop” (originally by Diplo), I knew I’d hear more from this guy. Coming across his SoundCloud page, I found a perfect beat that hit the dubspot.

“Peg Leg” is exactly why I would consider dubstep the Devil’s music (in a good way), well, if he existed. Enjoy this nightmare before the Christmas season overtakes our playing habits.

Make You Pop (Hooky Dubstep Remix) by Diplo

If the devil listened to music, this would be it.

I don’t know why I like dubstep, but sometimes the beat takes you. It’s like screamo music, only a certain person can handle it.

I’m not into a lot of dupstep, however, a nice blend of dub vibes fused with anything from Nelly Furtado to Mozart will get my rave face on.

Hooky’s remix of “Make You Pop” has a good build until it drops so-damn-hard 53 seconds in. The beat hits right on the spot with some unusual sounds for music. Only in dubstep could you drop in something that sounds like your computer just got totally fucked – and sound goood. Enjoy.
