As this bitch of a year comes to a close, there isn’t anything better than soulful singers to give it some grace. I haven’t put together a soul singers playlist for about a year, so there’s a lot of musicians to cover (72!)
In our last Lip Service playlist, it had soul, but no women. I think it’s as important as ever to show appreciation to the women you love, and I love these musician. Or I’m sure I would if I knew them.
This one’s for the woman I do, Lizzzz.
We anti-Valentined last year with our Hip Hop + Heartbreak, thanks to the help of mimb, and this year we’re covering everything but (hip hop).
Most of heartbroke (as fuck) is some sort of soul music along the electronic scale, leaning heavy on electronic near the end.
If you’re in for a lonely Valentine’s this year, I hope this makes for a good background soundtrack.
I’ve listened to way too much music this year, probably around 12,000 new tracks (I tried calculating it). Most of the music was.. unfinished, to say the least, but we found a lot more songs worth keeping than any year before it.
A lot of new music emerged or reemerged over the year. Deep house was the big thing, but many discredit it because of the hype. It had its bad with its good. Our favorite new style goes to what doesn’t seem to have an official name yet. I’ve heard many call it kawaii, but I prefer vapor – this naming shit is more important than you’d think.
We’ve got 30 songs to show off, 11 artists and 20 playlists for you, but if that’s not enough… wait ’til next year.
Gambino may back up his raps with pristine beats, but Bahler brings on a whole new perspective to his Childish words. In this mash, Gambino’s “Heartbeat” gets a disco fresh take with beats sampled from Midnight Conspiracy’s remix of “Crimewave,” originally by Crystal Castles & HEALTH. Definitely an upbeat, dance worthy hell of a time!

The biggest change I see in Gambino’s Camp over his last few mixtapes is the production and fuckin fab.u.loso vocals.
Production is definitely the most surprising aspect to this album. With all of Gambino’s past work, I thought of it as just a fun side project to his “real” work (comedy). Now that I see his dedication with production and bringing in other acts to support him, I see it’s more than just […]
[audio:Fire-Fly.mp3|titles=Fire Fly]I’ve gone through Gambino’s CAMP one time through and I was pretty damn shocked with it, to say the least. Let’s just say I’ll be doing a top albums of the year all thanks to the Mr. Glover, aka Childish Gambino, aka Dong Lover. But until the full album’s release next Tuesday, I’m gonna hold off on my full thoughts on the album.
Until then, here’s the first single off the album, rightfully titled “Outside.” With its inspiring tune and a touche type message, Gambino gets all of us reclusive types to once again realize maybe we should get the fuck out of the house once in a while. Wish this was a Spring album, so I could actually take the advice, though some sledding might do me in nice.
[audio:Outside.mp3|titles=Outside]To promote his upcoming album, Camp, Gambino did a freestyle over at Sway in the Morning against DJ Wonder’s “5 Fingers of Death.” From dubstep to reggae, Gambino shows off his freestyle talents in just about every fashion. He may not have had the most immaculate freestylings, but his cunning style is ever present. Now this is some real shit.
[audio:Gambino-Sway.mp3|titles=Sway In The Morning Freestyle]Xaphoon needs to do something with Gambino cause these two match up better than just a mashup. But as far as mashups go, this is another one that sure as hell competes with the originals. Well done, 21azy – Minnesota rep.re.sent!

The track was just released on SoundCloud, but has a whole different vibe goin for it.
At first I was a little skeptical hearing this new version. But after listening to its moving beat and soft stricken strings, it hit deep. It’s not just the empowering beats laid under Gambino’s rhymes, but the lyrics themselves – they’re getting more personal and free flowing than ever before. His vocals are as endearing as ever and, after criticizing his rap style for so long, I’m finally starting to see it.
Most of all, it’s nice to know I’m posting more for Childish Gambino and less because of Donald Glover.
