Mayer Hawthorne · Her Favorite Song (Oliver Remix)

Gettin funky with Hawthorne's sensual somethings

The Oliver duo, consisting of U-Tern & Oligee, just did a remix of Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Her Favorite Song’ and man is it on the funky side. Hawthorne has one of my favorite voices of this past decade, but Oliver takes his sound to my neck of the woods in music right now, electro funk.

5 Reasons · Night Drive In Moscow

featuring Patrick Baker on vocals

Alright, this shit is just getting too damn sexy. If you knew me in “real” life, you’d know this is just way too sexy for me. I’m in fact the polar opposite of how sexy this is (I’m workin on it). Anyways. These Russian fucks going by 5 Reasons make some soulful shit that, again, is just too sexy for me (I can’t highlight this enough). However, most of the soul in this actually hails from good ol’ Nashville, Tennessee. Patrick Baker has some fuckin charm in his vocals and 5 Reasons adds just the right touch to it. So Sexy.

Whitney Houston · How Will I Know (Acapella)

There's just no better way to remember her.

There’s no better way to remember what Whitney Houston’s done for us and what we’ll remember her by than with a beautiful acapella of her song, “How Will I Know,” leaving her voice alone & unadulterated. I don’t know of many singers who sound this good by themselves, but I know this is just as amazing as any with instrumentals added. <3 missed View Full Article »

Lord Echo’s Melodies

New Zealand Reggae chilled for the cold winter

Quick, come up with 3 countries you think would be most likely to produce 2010’s chillest album. Was New Zealand on your list Didn’t think so, but it’s time to change that.

Lord Echo is the solo moniker of New Zealander, Mike Fabulous, a veteran of the Wellington music scene and member of the reggae band The Black Seeds. Melodies is his first solo release, and damn has he nailed it. He has taken a full complement of synthesizers, keyboards, guitars, basses, and horns, provided by both himself and a variety of other Wellington musicians, and crafted a masterpiece which blends reggae, dub, soul, afro, disco, funk, and […]

Flying Overseas by Theophilus London

featuring Devonté Hynes & Solange Knowles

I thought Beyonce had a beautiful voice; but after hearing Solange on this track, I think I’m changing my focus. This beautiful backup makes the song.

“Flying Overseas” is about a Brooklyne native dreaming of traveling the world with a loved one. A fantasy we’ve all had, done well.

Meditate on this mental trip.

Do I Do (U-Tern Disco Edit) by Stevie Wonder

"Yes I got some candy kisses for your lips."

I’m finally getting how to find music I like on SoundCloud. The site’s mostly compiled of DJ’s with a lot of new and exciting talents. A lot of it’s experimental and therefor won’t appeal to a large audience, but there’s still a lot of tracks that will, or at least I hope…

U-Tern’s remix of “Do I Do” by Stevie Wonder is a fresh edit to a classic. It’s got a good build to it and once it tops off, you can’t help but shakin’ yo booty (I did) or doin’ the “white man’s dance”, as my father pointed out.

I look forward to following this stylish Canadian DJ. I really hope he put’s out more remixes to great R&B legends… Bill Withers!

The Seed (2.0) by The Roots

"I lick the opposition 'cause she don't take no pill."

Banner for Phrenology

Yea yea, a lot of you are gonna know this one. The Roots are pretty well established now, but I’ve been listening to this one for years and can’t get enough. What makes it good is the mix of the Root’s instrumentals with neo soul singer, Cody Chesnutt; the two blend well. Another reason for my admiration for this song is the lyrics, which uses some “ballsy” euphemisms. ;)

The original song, Seed, was featured in Chesnutt’s only LP, The Headphone Masterpiece, which was release in late 2002. I’ve included the original in the player below for your listening pleasure, though it’s really not that good.

Cruisin’ by Smokey Robinson

Know Good Classics - #2 R&B

Banner for Where There's Smoke

The second feature in the Know Good Classics series, Cruisin’, is a soft & soulful trip by Smokey Robinson. It features Robinson’s delicate sound, accompanied with some (uncredited) backup vocals which harmonize with Robinson wonderfully. The song rekindles my appreciation for The Miracles and R&B, in general. It’s a perfect song for a nice, comforting night with a loved one.
