Frank Ocean · Pyramids

He just keeps gettin betta

A new Frank Ocean with the usual sensual seduction, but unlike his usual, “Pyramids” takes that synth to heights, something similar to a Starfucker beat. I wonder if it’s from a Starfucker beat… I just love saying Starfucker.

Wick-it the Instigator · Grey Sky (feat. Heather Jones)

From mashups to this? Oh, happy daze.

I’ve known Wick-it for making some superb mashups & bass’d out remixes, but creating shit from scratch is a whole new ball game. I’ve seen many cross the line from mashups to originals and it’s not usually pretty. But the Instigator puts down one pretty piece this time.

‘Grey Sky’ over takes Wick-it’s Weathermaker EP with a whole new level of strange bass. The jazz influenced, soul samples combined with that abstract bass is more than enough to praise, but slap down Heather Jones on the mic and her hymns bring this beyond praise.

The Next SoundCloud

What "Your Stream" is Missing

Getting back from vacation two weeks ago, I was finally accepted into the beta testing of SoundCloud’s latest revamp, ‘The Next SoundCloud.’ My first thought, like most, was that “this looks pretty slick.” But after exploring around a bit, I realized, like most, that I had to revert back to the classic mode for one reason or another.

Many are having issues with the beta and have been bitching about it on SoundCloud’s blog and other forums. As much as I agree with most of their complaints, most forget that this is a beta testing. That said, I do have a few issues myself to “bitch about.” And it’s strictly to do with the new stream, or ‘Your Stream,’ because that’s the only reason I switched back to classic mode so fast, which is why I never explored the other additions to SoundCloud NEXT […]

Figure · The Brink (Original Mix)

Proving that even the dirtiest shit can have a catchy melody.

Ever have a song pop into your head by complete random and it gets stuck in your head all day I was recently having a discussion with someone about how electronic music doesn’t have words, so nothing can really get stuck in your head. Well, Figure’s ‘The Brink’ proves that wrong… kind of.

While I was in Israel I hadn’t listened to ‘The Brink’ in days, but on the very last day that catchy, grindy melody got stuck up in that head of mine, all damn day (along with the lyrics). Point is, ya can just as easily get a melody stuck in my head as ya can the lyrics… though, the lyrics sound a bit better when repeating it back to a friend ;)

JOSH JAKQ · See You Later

I dunno if it's that falsetto or that tune, but this shit's tantalizing.

Who would’ve thought such soulful music could’ve come out of Australia (other than the Aussies) I guess that’s what I love so much about SoundCloud and the internet as a whole, it breaks down the barriers of where specific styles of music are known for thriving.

This Aussie, who goes by Josh Jakq, sounds like Justin Timerblake taking on The Weeknd, as Zach of FMI points out. I don’t know if he’s got the lyrical forte quite down yet, more so referring to his other track, but he sure has his sound locked down.

Madeon · Finale (Original Mix)

A hint at his shifting in sounds?... I hope so.

I don’t usually post these tag infested tracks, but I guess Madeon is the exception, especially when I caught my first glimpse of ‘Finale’ on YouTube. The first YouTube teaser seemed to be a more glitch infused, experimental track than the final product turned out to be, but as disaspointed as I may be in that (just a lil’), we all know it’s still gonna be a top marked track on the EDM scene… once we get ahold of the final cut, that is.

+ ‘Finale’ may be a hint at his shifting in style & this is the banger to close it out… at least I’m hopin’.

Red Sky Lullaby · Magic In Your Eyes

Featuring the ever so soulful vocals of Frank H Carter III

There’s nothing quite better than stumbling across a gem like this, especially when it’s yet to be pounced on by every other blogger in the atmosphere.

‘Magic In Your Eyes’ borrows vocals from the soulful Frank H Carter III, who carries a tune quite similar to Sam Sparro‘s. But unlike Sparro, Carter is something to be discovered. I don’t know if it’s Red Sky Lullaby’s abrasive neo soul tune, but this shit is hitting righter than anything I’ve listened to in a while (it’s been a long while).

Ellie Goulding · High For This (The Weeknd Cover)

Can Xaphoon & Ellie pour out the soul enough to top the original?

Ellie Goulding covering my favorite neo soul singer… this sounds too good to be true. And to top it all off we get Xaphoon of Chiddy Bang on production… yep, these names are building it up to something not even they can live up to. And as much as I love the concept, it’s going to take some time for me to fall for the actual product (if I ever do).

I like the overall production, but I think a dubstep mood like Downpour’s remix of ‘High for This’ might’ve suited Ellie better. As for her roll, she’s as ethereal as ever, but sure doesn’t spark the emotion that The Weeknd’s original does for me… not even close. But who knows, maybe a few weeks of warming up to it will change my mind… usually the first taste is a good indicator, though.

Adventure Club · Wait

Doing what most producers tend not to, progress

Adventure Club is known for taking gorgeous vocals and wrapping ’em around their own style of dubstep, and just when I was growing a wee bit tired of it, they take on Yeah Yeah Yeahs ‘Maps’ with a varied charm. It may not have the affect of some of their first tracks I was introduced to, but it clearly shows a progression in their vocal cuts and the consistency in not needing the filthiest drops, yet still being as bass worthy as the rest.

We still gotta get these guys pairing up with original vocals more to carry ’em to the Next Level.

Mochipet’s Godzilla Bass Mashups

Too Short vs. Maguera || Wiz Khalifa vs. Gigan

Love when these mashers take on quality MC’s and mash ’em up with much hotter electro tunes. Mochipet is known for producing some next level bass music, but he’s also one to occasionally throw in some mashup freebies. And these freebies come in the tune of Too Short & Wiz Khalifa, which’ll sure as shit get yo heartbeat bouncin. But which one bounces best I gotta go with Too Short.
