Outside Lands 2012 has an eclectic set of artists to say the least. I’ll be covering it this year and even though my main goal is to see acts I’ve never heard before, there are a few I know who I’ve got to see! Check out my top picks for Outside Lands 2012 below and let me know who I should and shouldn’t see (here‘s the full line up). If you happen to be going as well, hit me up in the comments or on Twitter and we can meet up!

I was sure the idea had died and no more freebies would be released, but then Vol. 2 was just released last week.
Free Treats Vol. 2 is dope. The sampler features over 20 artists on 19 tracks, with contributions from The M Machine, Alvin Risk, Bare Noize, Topher Jones, and a quite a few more. [side note: it sounds like Nick Thayer has finally gotten a proper introduction to OWSLA]. There are too many tracks to dissect them all, but this release is well worth your time to listen to. I think its safe to say we can expect big things from OWSLA in the near future.

The man’s explosion onto the EDM scene just over one year ago took everyone by surprise. Practically overnight, he went from being a niche-scene unknown into an ambassador of EDM with 8 of Beatport’s top 10 slots all to himself for a at least a few weeks. I’m pretty sure that’s never happened before.
So this must have some significance, right I mean we, the music-listening community, are the ones who gave Sonny his throne. Why has his music generated so much (more than normal) backlash

It’s not easy to surprise me, especially with music, but Skrillex has shocked the hell out of me with this. “Breathe” is no ‘brostepper,’ it’s a melodic dubstep track that’s nothing but relaxation. Only thing I’m not sure of are the vocals, reminds me of Owl City. However, major props to Skrillex for trying something different (all musicians should). Wondering what his fans think, though…
Talk about mashing up two of the best remixes with two of the loveliest vocals of the year and topping it all off with a little MJ intro… how the hell could you not love this Ipaneema takes everything I love about Skrillex’s remix of “Cinema” – Gary Go & those high-touch synths – and lays it with Madeon’s infamous “Raise Your Weapon” remix, which outclasses Deadmau5’s original in every way.
I do wish a bit more of the “Cinema” beat from Skrillex’s remix was highlighted – especially those synths, so melodic – but I guess that grimey dubstep may not work too well here.

It originally started out as just general remixes of video game themes, but after compiling the majority of them, it turned out to be mainly dubstep. Unfortunately, that led to a few good remixes getting cut for now, most notably a favorite hip-hop Mario mashup of mine.
I tried my darndest to get the most memorable classics – such as Zelda, Sonic, Mario and a few other noteworthy – but couldn’t manage to find quality ones for a few. There are just so many damn dubstep remixes out there and most of ’em are complete shit – it’s one of the fastest emerging genres, so there’s bound to be a lot of people hoppin’ on the bandwagon. However, I did manage to come up with 8 solid remixes, so help us come up with the rest and I’ll make sure to give up some cool prizes!! First off, “Hip-Hop Remixes of Video Game Classics”.

I’ve heard quite a few electrofied remixes of RATM tracks and there still not getting old. I like how The White Panda put it, “this is how Rage would sound if they were to delve into this era of electronic dance music” today.

I was always wondering when mainstream music would catch on to dubstep, and Korn was just the right group to introduce it – Metal & Dubstep were a perfect combo from the start. And as much as I love the concept, this newly released track is… well, meh.
“Narcissistic Cannibal” has got some healthy screams and rubs for that dub-dub delight, but the more I listen to it, the more mediocre it gets. I don’t know if it’s just that nostalgic Korn sound that I’m well over or the choice of dubstep producers, but as eager as I am to push this movement, I’m not so eager to push this track.

I actually quite enjoyed a couple of the tracks, but more for who he remixed rather than the actual remixes themselves.
He’s got a few bangers that are done real well, but most of his shit just seems marginally above the rest. That’s why I really want to hear the good and bad from you all. I first had a discussion to see if Skrillex was considered Brostep (still can’t figure what that is, haha), but now I just want to understand his mass appeal.
