The Hood Internet · Deny Strings (Mashup)

featuring Fabolous x Nate Dogg x Classixx

Sometimes this flows oh.so.well and others it feels off like mashups tend to (at times). But what I love about it is its new feel to Fabolous & Nate Dogg. If you’re gonna mashup popular hip-hop, put something different in any way possible.

Chris Isaak · Wicked Game (TAD Edit)

Bringin this suave 90s single back

A soothing house # that takes Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and makes it as sensual as ever. Man, I remember the “Wicked Game” music video from back in the day #90sSuave!

Big Mike · Rocket

Bringin on that Gutterfly shit from the Dirty South

Big Mike sounds a hell of a like those Gutterfly boys, the Lifesavas, and I’m so damn into it. Dude is more ghetto funk than Ghetto Funk. Make sure to check out his LP, Bayou Classic – Love.Faith.Honor.Loyalty if you’re feelin this.

8corp · Tight Stripes (Mashup)

featuring Janelle Monae, The White Stripes & so much more

One of my favorite supa mashas is back at it again. His “Bad Mama Jama Mania” was one of my favorite mashups of 2011 and this is slowly becoming a favorite of 2012.

In his “Tight Stripes” mashup, 8corp takes even more samples than last time and aligns ’em to one well formed, free flowing mashup. This is why I love super mashups so much, they take a little of a lot and compile it into something completely new (well, maybe not completely).

Mr. Wonk · Shadows

Brostep, but beyond.

This may have the mechanical feel that people refer to as brostep, but Wonk drives in mind-rumbling bass that moves me way beyond that shit. And to top it off, those good ol’ synths to really bring me beyond. Ya gotta check this shit, brooo.

Skai Nine · Crystallize

As beautiful as it is reminiscing.

Damn, do I miss that downtempo melodicness. I’ve been too wrapped up in heavy bass drops & progressive house highs to sit back & tune out to the calmer beats.

Skai Nine’s “Crystalize” may not be music to fall asleep to, but it’s one reflective tune, in the least. Especially love the synth melody on this, it’s as beautiful as it is reminiscing.

The Weeknd · Same Old Song (Remix)

Paper Diamond throws in some bass with attitude

Paper Diamond hops on as another Weeknd remixer and remakes “Same Old Song” with finely cut bass that rolls over those signature Weeknd vocals. Wasn’t all that much of a fan of the original, but Paper Diamond throws in that mind-numbing bass that gets me every.damn.time.

Swordfight · We Will Never Know

From the bassed-out minds of Sugarpill & ChrisB.

Sugarpill & ChrisB. team up as Swordfight to bring us a fine mix of lazer-crunk madness and soothing, bass-filled melodies. This’ll be a part of the Disciples of Headtron: Vol. I mixtape, which takes all the West Coast crunkers and compiles ’em for fine tuning. Let’s just say if they’re all as basstastic as this, I’ll be fiending fo more!

Spoonhead · GlitchHopapotomus

Remixing Flight of the Conchords with lazer-crunk & glitch bass

This sure as hell doesn’t need those funny as rhymers who go by the Flight of the Conchords, but it sure makes for good comic relief. Spoonhead’s glitched-out remix of “Hiphoppotamus vs. Rhymenocerous” is one heeavvvvvvy lazer-crunk beat with supporting vocals from Jermaine & Bret.

“They call me the Hiphopopotamus, my lyrics are bottomless….”

Sunday Girl · Love U More (RAC Mix)

RAC City, bitch.

The Remix Artists Collective (RAC) are by no means new to the remix scene.  They have been an anomaly for the past few years, dropping consistently solid mixes to already well-known and loved songs.  However, they have flown pretty under the radar as far as blogs go, and credit is finally due. Where 2011 was a year of glitchy beats, neon and heavy bass drops, I foresee 2012 as a year fueled by minimalism, the all-powerful synth… and hopefully – for my skin-tone’s sake – less neon and more pastels.

In the past few months, RAC has dropped some arguably better-than-original remixes.  In my current favorite, “Love U More” by Sunday Girl, they did so by removing the unnecessarily heady house music-feel and cranking up the classic snyth-pop vibe, which gives the song a much less “epic” and more endearing, simple feel. While I can’t say I’m not a fan of the […]
