I went to Outside Lands for its 10th anniversary to see the Gorillaz, but I ended up getting too drunk and ruining it for my girlfriend. Fortunately, I turned it around day two and three, so that’s good. Especially day three.
For most long weekend festivals, one day usually has the best performances, often more than the others combined. We started off the last day of Outside Lands with Lee Fields & The Expressions, Khruangbin in the afternoon, and Solange at night, but nothing mattered that day more than Jacob Banks. It was his weekend.
A fucking angel
When I heard Jacob Banks live for the first time, it felt like I should’ve been there. Something I knew I would remember. He’s got a voice that gets me saying random obscenities. I can’t believe what I’m hearing. I talk a lot about how a singer’s voice is more about how they use it than what they have. Jacob Banks can use it, but his voice is a fucking angel.
It translates well recorded, but he’s one of the best performers I’ve seen in 2017. We’ll be seeing him again at The Independent Nov 4. Join us.
Worst name, great guitarin’
Krogbin, or however you say it (Khruangbin), is the worst band name I’ve ever said in my head. I don’t know why it pisses me off so much, I’m sure it’s named for good reason, but their guitar melodies make up for it. Tantalizing, especially in the misty winds at Golden Gate Park.
