Grieves · On the Rocks

"Sick a tryin' to strum a long with your love song."

Just picked up Grieves’ new album, Together/Apart. Until I get through it a few times, take a look at this music video for “On the Rocks”. Love what Grieves does with his vocals, it’s refreshing to hear among the hip-hop I gotta tread through each day.

Kenton Dunson ·· Creative Destruction 2

It's more than Kenton Dunson- it's life, ambition, heartbreak & passion.

Kenton Dunson first became a blip on the radar with his remix of John Legend’s cover of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” and his buzz has only grown since. We previously featured his second single “Firestarter” off Creative Destruction 2 and today we have the final product. If you enjoyed that single, you will love this entire album. My only gripe about it is the length of it. Although, I guess it is better for an artist to leave you wanting more rather than less.

There are some real gems on Creative Destruction 2 and choosing a favorite track from it is a tough decision. Specifically, I am having a hard time deciding if I love “Face Off” or “Mine Again” […]

Lupe Fiasco Calls President Obama A Terrorist

But the real issue is the lack of communication between Lupe & O'Reilly

Does our boy Lupe Fiasco look a little lost to you in this picture Maybe it’s because he is. Just last night, political commentator, Bill O’Reilly, had Lupe Fiasco on his show to discuss recent events, like the capture and killing of Osama Bin Laden. In this 5 minute video, O’Reilly found it a bit hard to get a word in and was a little shocked by the amount of interruptions . . . and I’m not talking about commercials.

Personally, I believe that someone at Lupe’s level who’s reach extends across the world and influences the minds of so many, this is not the way he should have conveyed his personal opinion on our nation’s leader. Fiasco is a significant representation of the American hiphop culture and I’ve already seen […]

Kyprios · How The West Was One

The chorus is too damn catchy.

Canada is surprising me in all fronts of music these days – from Hip-Hop to R&B, shit is swellin’ up North.

In my latest find, Kyprios, formerly from Sweatshop Union, teamed up with Rob the Viking of Swollen Members for “How The West Was One” – a tribute to the Vancouver Canucks. The lyrics are catchy as hell, especially those chorus lines. It’s that shit when you wake up in the morning and can’t get it out of your head.

Blue Scholars · Seijun Suzuki

"You know we got hella class like a bidet."

“Seijun Suzuki” hit the hardest the first time around Cinemetropolis – that beat just catches. Now that I’ve been listening to Cinemetropolis a few more times, I’m starting to feel a few more.

I’ve been listening to Blue Scholars for a few years now and love what they’re doin in the Pacific Northwest. Sabzi is progressing his sound nicely and Geo keeps on with the lyrics. Hit me up with your favorites on this until I get in a few more listens. (Check it on Bandcamp)

Big Sean (feat. Rick Ross & Pusha T) · 100 Keys

What pushing a 100 Keys sounds like.

Is it the incredible beat or the fact that the BOSS is on this that makes this track so dope. I have a feeling it is a little bit of both. If you didn’t know, Big Sean is the truth and is one of the cooler artists in my book simply because he just released his entire debut album, Finally Famous, for stream on his Soundcloud. I listened to it.. and again.. and again and came to the conclusion that “100 Keys” with Rick Ross and Pusha T is by far the stand out track on the album. Each of the rappers kill their verses and the beat is unlike any song I have heard lately. This is what pushing a 100 keys sounds like. Get money […]

Kenton Dunson (feat. Ryan Kellie) · Firestarter

Dedicated to the one's who burn your heart and a trail of guys after you.

We’ve all come across one of these or know someone who has, albeit under a different name – more commonly known as heartbreakers, Kenton Dunson calls them firestarters. The one’s who burn your heart and a trail of guys after you. As Kenton says, “I feel bad for the next guy.. and the next guy,” you should be cautious around these ones.

Nevertheless, they make for great song material as Kenton gracefully demonstrates over a harmonious piano and synth melody. The chorus will have you hooked from the beginning, but the verses from Kenton really make […]

Kanye West · Mama’s Boyfriend

A throwback to that pre-Dark Fantasy vibe

After Kanye hit up Facebook headquarters in July of last year with an a capella of “Mama’s Boyfriend”, we finally get to hear the track with full productions from, who’s rumored to be, Madlib or Q-tip (but who knows).

This is definitely a throwback to Kanye’s older sound and is probably the reason why it wasn’t on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Whatever whoever is sayin, it’s good to hear this style of Kanye pop up over his progression in music.

Elzhi · Lifes a Bitch

Elzhi's tribute to the legendary Illmatic

In 1994, one of the best debut albums of all time, Illmatic, was dropped by Nasir Jones, aka Nas. World renowned producers DJ Premier, Q-Tip and Pete Rock all took turns in the studio making beats that have become anthems for most hip-hop lovers across the world.

Jason Powers, better known as Elzhi from hip-hop group Slum Village, decided to pay tribute to the legendary rapper’s first studio recorded album by referencing all the same beats and even some of the same lines, but over the stories and struggles of an emerging 21st-century artist […]

Uzi Octopus · Let It Fall Aside (feat. Raw Poetic)

Another side project from Restoring Poetry in Music

Uzi Octopus is a side project from a long admired hip-hop band of mine, Restoring Poetry in Music (RPM). Not quite sure when the project’s gonna drop or really any more information about it – they really need to get their ass goin’ on the whole online marketing thang – but I know it just finished up, so expect a release date soon.

“Let It Fall Aside”, the first single to hit the ‘net, features RPM’s very own MC, Raw Poetic. I gotta imagine he’ll be on the entire album and, hopefully, P-Fritz will lend some backup vocals, as well (amazing voice).

Until the release, check out a few of RPM’s stuff and another side project gone legit duo, Panacea.
