This definitely would’ve made my Ellie Goulding Dubstep Remix Compilation if it came out about three months earlier, but like the other “Starry Eyed” dubstep remix by Jawkob, both falter at the drop. Minnesota’s “drops” may have been better executed than Jakwob’s, but it’s still nothing compared to the top two on the list. Even worse, his distortion of Ellie’s voice is unneeded and not properly pulled off.
However, he still brings a heavy dose of dubstep for the dubstep queen, Ellie Goulding. I especially loved his use of higher pitched tones […]
[audio:Starry-Eyed-Minnesota.mp3|titles=Starry Eyed (Minnesota Remix)]I don’t know what’s going on in New Zealand, but I’ve been finding some of the best DJ’s & bands from the Kiwi coast. Especially in the funk arena, NZ seems to be tearin’ up SoundCloud with a few labels and many artists to follow.
FunkFerret being among my favorite, particularly has a craft for mashing up classic tracks to a funkified beat – the “Red Wine Rebelution” mash is a favorite. Hit up these two tracks below (free download at FunkFerret’s SoundCloud) and get into the funk.
[audio:Smash-Ya-Moustache.mp3|titles=Smash Ya Moustache]I’ve been on Turntable for the last few days, which is the main reason for my lack of recent posts (obsessed). The reason I bring it up is because when I was DJing in the “Dubstep” room, a lot of ’em brought up the term “brostep”, which I had no idea what it meant at the time. After listening to Skrillex’s two new EP’s, My Name is Skrillex and Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites EP, I think I understand what they meant.
I’m not trying to label Skrillex’s music as brostep, but I’m starting to see where the term applies. Brostep simply means dubstep without soul (as I found). Some believe it incorporates samples, mainly from hip-hop, but this is where I tend to disagree. Brostep, in my definition, would be dubstep with no real focus, which throws in gaudy none sense for affect… or simply lacks soul […]
[audio:Ask-Of-You.mp3|titles=All I Ask of You (feat. Penny)]I was introduced to moombahton by some school friends a few months back. I recently just read on another blog that moombahton sounds like “house reggae”. Interesting way to put it ’cause they kind of hit the nail on the head with that. My opinion; some of the sexiest, panty-dropping music since Barry White. This track, produced by New England native DJ Theory, has been on repeat on my iPod for the last 6 days.
Featured on David Heartbreak’s “Moombahsoul Vol. 1” (who’s rework of The Weeknd’s “Rolling Stone” made me sweat), Theory has alot to be recognized for. Producer/DJ for MA-based hiphop group The Problemaddicts, official scratch DJ for the SF 49ers and founder/co-owner of the […]
[audio:Cant-Get-Enough.mp3|titles=Can’t Get Enough]Aight, so there’s eight summertime songs mashed in this next of PL 2011 Remixes, “Pretty Lights vs Summertime”. I’ll throw one out and y’all give me the rest! That’s right, a lil’ participation from you SOB’s ;)
1. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince – Summertime
[audio:Pretty-Lights-Summertime.mp3|titles=Pretty Lights vs Summertime]Goulding is still the DUBSTEP Queen, but a nice change of pace sets this “Starry Eyed” night right. The remix brings in vocals from Theophilis London’s cover of “Starry Eyed” and the two mix well.
Can’t wait to see her in Minneapolis this August… since she cancelled last time :(
[audio:Starry-Eyed-Penguin-Remix.mp3|titles=Starry Eyed (Penguin Prison Remix)]Can’t believe how many tracks are weaved into this, but even so, it comes out sounding like one solid mashup. With a heavier bass, ominous tunes and even more experimental sounds than GAYNGS’ original, “Faded High”, BAHLER’s “Love Me” is one heavy mashup that doesn’t rely on pop vocals to make it a success – a success that it is.
[audio:Love-Me.mp3|titles=Love Me]Always impressed by a talented beatboxer . . . but over a drum & bass beat Wow, what a combo. Stumbled across Warrior Music’s Soundcloud a few months back and was blown away by every track, “Chasing Sky” in particular (along with “Middle of the Night”, so be sure to check that one out too!)
I love dubstep, but (personally) always to a certain point – here, Warrior Music has a really nice balance of integrating dubstep/drum & bass/vocals within one another, which kind of lightens the heavy load. However, I do wish he used Ekko’s beatboxing a bit more here, but hey, at least he got the ball rolling on a new trend […]
[audio:Chasing-Sky.mp3|titles=Chasing Sky]We’re finally into PL 2011 with a downtempo remix/mashup that takes on Pretty Lights’ signature sounds and remixes three classic alternative rock tracks in – Radiohead’s “Everything in its Right Place”, Nirvana’s “All Apologies” & NIN’s “Closer”. It may not be as bang worthy as some of his others, but it’s nice to see a more relaxed, chilled out vibe coming in. As much as he can pop it off, PL has some real mind numbing downtempo work, including probably my most favorite of his, “Solamente“.
Hit us up with some artists you’d like to see Pretty Lights remix for 2011.
I really wanna see a good Hendrix remix.
For this year’s Lighting in a Bottle Festival, another Lighting in Your Ear compilation rolls out to help support the Critical Beats charity. The charity is “a united effort to preserve our most critical environmental resources” through current music inspirations.
The compilation is a healthy 17-track display of the talent coming this year to the Lighting in a Bottle Festival. It seems to be a mix of electro-swag from Pretty Lights to Beats Antique, but also dips into that melodramatic female driven indie rock sound (or whatever you wanna call it). You can pick it up over on Bandcamp, support it in any way you can […]
