Jesus, I did not realize Brandy’s “Baby” was so hot! Thank ColeCo for the refresh with an all too funky bass. Makes me realize Brandy wasn’t just some 90’s teen tv actress. God, that voice with that bass!

This one’s even got a pretty sly message under it, but that’s not why Bodhi’s Imperfection has been keeping my attraction. Bodhi cuts up ‘Imperfection’ with finesse, giving a clean midtempo breakbeat performance. My favorite part comes 50 seconds in and lasts a good 15. A spine-tingling buildup.
One flaw I found in ‘Imperfection’ was at 2:47 and a few bars after, but after listening to it a couple more times through I realized that was all apart of the fun in ‘Imperfection.’

Starfucker (STRFKR) was one of my first obsessions on the blog just four years back (happy birthday to us!), but of course it took a fairly experimental remix to wet our appetite again. We actually fell off this Wet Paint remix for a while, it was posted 3 months back, but Starfucker’s video for ‘While I’m Alive’ creeped into our life and got us obsessed it once again.
This ‘While I’m Alive’ remix may take its sorry ass time to kick in the vocals, but once the whole thing gets going it reminds me of why I was obsessed with Starfucker in the first place. Such distinct and memorable vocals.

Funkerman’s Can You Feel It Records hit me up with three remixes of ‘Wine & Roll’ a couple days back. I pretty much fell in love with ’em straight from the start, but was a little misinformed at the time. See, I thought the ‘Wine & Roll’ original was a much more popular hit simply because I-Candy’s lines sounded so familiar. But after trying to google her lyrics and Shazam that shiz (I don’t really talk like this), I finally just figured it out through Funkerman’s record label. And apparently this is not the pop hit I once thought it to be.
So either this ‘Wine & Roll’ sounds like a hit I’ve heard before or this is sure to be one soon enough. So listen in and let me know if this sounds like anything you’ve heard before. We’re either finding this mystery out or getting this to the pop status it deserves.

As far as the remixes go, the Peter Horrevorts version is my favorite, although it starts out slow. I actually like the beat better than I-Candy’s vocals – she may deserve mainstream pop status, but pop still isn’t my thing.

The Oliver duo, consisting of U-Tern & Oligee, just did a remix of Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Her Favorite Song’ and man is it on the funky side. Hawthorne has one of my favorite voices of this past decade, but Oliver takes his sound to my neck of the woods in music right now, electro funk.

With a name like Follow Me, I was instantly turned off. The name sounds like a gimmick, and like every other crave fame musician they pitched my SoundCloud inbox where all I needed it was in my dropbox (sorry, the name made me bring it up). But besides their dated marketing techniques, Follow Me has got a sound that I’m so into right now.
One of their latest singles, ‘Somethin’ Bout You,’ starts off like a dream with repitched vocals that now seem standard on this blog. Once the deep chords hit however, this new style of soul drops to vast new levels.

I asked WMNSTUDIES if they had any Janet remixes on file – I’m putting together a super solid (yes, super) mix of JJ remixes – but they didn’t have anything finished quite yet. I held off on this super solid mix to see what they could come up with, but I soon started to realize I may not like it. WMNSTUDIES has been pretty consistent so far, but too many times I’ve had to let down an artist and they usually don’t take it too well.
Thankfully, WMNSTUDIES keeps with the quality and mixes one of Janet’s hits into another disco-pop sampler that I’ve been over-obsessing over lately. I don’t know if it’s got the moves to take on a few of my favorite Janet Jackson remixes I got lined up, but they’ve definitely made the cut.

Even when this world feels fake and contrived at least our music doesn’t. Sometimes you just need a funky-ass tune (all the time) and FKJ’s Lying Together is just one of many. And I shall put them all together for a Lying Together mix sometime soon for you.

Crossing language barriers in music has always been difficult, but when the beat is right then we don’t need no stinking words that mean anything. Funk LeBlance, a producer from the Bay, not only takes french and turns it on its disco//funk ear, but classics from Michael Jackson & Jade as well. Especially love Jade’s ‘Every Day of the Week’ flipped and flopped around for this generation’s ears.

There’s something soothing about repetition, and like Magic Touch & Sapphire Slows – ‘When I See You’, Jook10 has the funkyass drum patterns that sooth out with repetition, though the lows might need a little softening. Beat really hits the vocals well on this ‘Just 4 Me’ remix. – – As always, gotta wonder who these vocals came from.
