Contest to Celebrate the Release of The Ronin

++ Win a chance to talk with K-Murdock on his radio show, Subsoniq!

For our second contest with K-Murdock, we’re celebrating the release of The Ronin, a 7-track EP filled with songs produced by K over the past three years. He decided to center the EP around independence because the tracks were all wandering singles floating around in pro tools until he decided to compile them all into an EP. The title, Ronin, also refers to the samurais of the feudal period who were independent of any masters [...]

Born UndaDogz · Back Then (feat. June Da Kid)

Gonna get back into that East Coast viiibe

It only takes a little something to make the beat ring right. Born UndaDogz take an old school sound with their single, “Back Then”, and put a little finesse to it. Love what they’re doin’ with that East Coast style, gonna try to get out of my West Coast funk, though it may take a bit more convincing.

Stigmah · King of Arcades

"If you're dreams are being a player, I'm ready to destroy it."

Stigmah comes on strong at first, but soon after you realize his flow in “King of Arcades” is fairly laid-back for such an intense beat. His rocked-out sound may be the first thing to catch your ear, but the wordplay with his gamer theme is what’ll keep ya. Stigmah weaves tales between reality and the digital world and makes flowing sound so damn easy.

It’s good to hear some quality rap coming from the South. Never been much a fan before, but as far as the underground hip-hop scene is goin, it’s gainin some real attention over here… well, really only in Atlanta, but it’s a good start.

Headnodic ·· Red Line Radio

Bringin those smooth West Coast vocals back.

Headnodic knows his West Coast MC’s and he’s gettin the best of ‘em on his newly released album, Red Line Radio. Surprisingly though, this isn’t what made the album, Headnodic’s production and ability to build something around the vocalist sets this above any ordinary mix of some of my favorite MC’s. Not only that, my favorite track isn’t by the classic MC’s I grew up on, but Ms. Destani Wolf.

Moufy · Miss Newton

"Don't fade away."

Some of my favorite songs tell a story, often a sad one. Eminem’s “Stan” comes to mind as well as Immortal Technique’s “Dance With The Devil” & “You Never Know.” The topics in these songs are not necessarily uplifting, but instead tell a relatable narrative. They have the power to draw us in and make us share the pain expressed in the song.

Moufy is the latest to tell us a story through his music, using the power of words and melodies to strike a chord with us emotionally. In “Miss Newton,” Moufy depicts a tale about love, alcohol abuse and the resulting consequences of the two. The ending is [...]

Best Thing About Turntable.fm Isn’t the DJing/Music

Plus, some good hip-hop from one of my favorite TT rooms

Turntable.fm is a live chat room where music lovers come to share and listen to music together. Rooms can be setup by anyone and consist of 1-5 DJ’s at a time. Topics for each room range from specific genres to music blogs that play just about everything.

The first type of room I got into was dubstep- although, I quickly realized that the crowd and music wasn’t for me. Apparently, I’m not into the “right” kind of dubstep, so I hit up the hip-hop & mashup rooms for a while. As much good music as I’ve found through these rooms, I wasn’t quite connecting with that many people. I started to realize that the best quality in TT.fm wasn’t finding new music, but connecting with [...]

Prometheus Brown & Bambu ·· Walk Into a Bar

From the Northwest to LA, these two are bringin' it to the Aloha Islands

You know I love me some of that Pacific Northwest shit, but put in a lil’ LA and spice it all off in Hawaii and I’m ready for some summer fresh hip-hop. Blue Scholars’ very own Geologic aka Geo aka Prometheus Brown teams up with LA native, Bambu, while on their University of Hawaii tour, to create a musically inspired project from the Aloha islands. Producers range from Sabzi (the other half of Blue Scholars) to Budo and many other talents.

Here’s a little from the dudes themselves – I’m done writing, I just wanna keep listening [...]

Grieves · On the Rocks

"Sick a tryin' to strum a long with your love song."

Just picked up Grieves’ new album, Together/Apart. Until I get through it a few times, take a look at this music video for “On the Rocks”. Love what Grieves does with his vocals, it’s refreshing to hear among the hip-hop I gotta tread through each day.
