Evil & Technology by Mayday

"I'm a slave to evil"... and technology.

Mayday’s latest EP’s, Technology & The Thinnest Line, came out over a year ago, just a couple of months apart from each other. Although they may not stack up to their first album, each has at least one catchy single.

The Thinnest Line features a single titled “Evil” – although, I don’t have much to say about it, its lyrics are too true… no offense, ladies ;). “Technology”, on the other hand, reminds me of my past years in college. My roommates and I senior year had a running joke about how obsessed I was with technology. It reminded me of just a few of the stupid things we did back then. Good times. “Technology” may have some corny lines, “USB, you and me connect so desperately”, but the rest of it isn’t half bad. I mean how bad could it be, it’s about technology.

I still can’t decide which sound I like better of the two. What do y’all think? I’m leaning more towards “Evil”, right now.

Mission Statement by Mayday

"And still they blast the blasphemy, they bask in it."

Banner of ¡MAYDAY!

In Chicago for the weekend, so I’m gonna make this short (gotta get wild soon). I posted Mayday’s self-titled album when the site was just starting off, and I had to give it another shout out (or at least one of its singles). This is one of my favorite beats along with some of my favorite flows, and I know most of y’all won’t go back to September ’09 in the blog, so I thought I’d do it for ya (it’s not me just being lazy, it’s a sick track/album). It’s short and sweet, and a good intro. to Mayday’s mission (statement).

Oh, and if you’re feelin’ this then follow us on Twitter, so you know when we post more sweet shyt (and so we know you like us).

Elephant Rome by CYNE

"Creativity my deity; I worship uniqueness."

I first caught Cise Star & Akin (MC’s for CYNE) on a few tracks from Nujabes. I was pretty damn impressed by how well they incorporated their voices into Nujabes’s sound, mainly because of their substantially differing backgrounds. I’ll actually feature one of the songs in my next post, so look out for that.

As for Elephant Rome, I wouldn’t say the beat is on par with what Nujabes produces, but it’s still fresh & on key. Both Cise Star & Akin take their rhymes and layer it on the beat with precision, but Akin seems to do slightly better job than Cise. He just seems a little more natural with the tune, where Cise is out of sync at times during his chorus lines. Other than that, it’s a great track that’s kept with me for a while; though i’ll admit I don’t listen to it as much as I use to.

All Too Common by Solillaquists of Sound

"She can't get mad, so she acts out of silence."

The beat is the most attractive part to this song. DiViNCi is a talented producer & beat maker… a lot of good beats have been comin’ from Florida, lately (e.g. Mayday). Swamburger (MC) flows well with DiViNCi, but I’m still not sure how I feel about Alexandrah. She’s got a beautiful voice, there’s no doubt, but I am not the biggest fan in how she uses it – I guess I’m just not feelin’ her intro. Anyways, Swamburger drops in nicely at 1:54, and goes on for about a minute. It’s tough to touch on his lyrics, usually they’re either good or not, and his definitely weren’t bad. After that, Alexandrah cuts back in at around 3:50, and lays a a funk-rhythmic sound down, but the chorus accompanying her seems out of place, though it did take me a while to notice this. Overall, this is a good great listen based on just the beat… not to mention the rhymes. Hopefully, i’ll be hearing more of Solillaquists of Sound… as tedious as their name is to type.

¡Mayday! by Mayday (Album)

A holiday from horrible hip-hop.

Banner for Mayday

A couple months back I was searching through a bunch of, well… shit when I found this gem. From the first song I could tell I was hooked. With their hard-hitting sound, Mayday really pulls off a distinct hip-hop flavor.

Mission Statement: Never has a hip-hop album got it so right on the first track (I over embellish at times). From the first note it grabs your attention and pulls you in. It incorporate some unique instrumentals; but what sets Mayday apart is their ability to flow without missing a beat. This is why I love Mission Statement so much!… along with Macro/Micro… and really most of their songs. :)
