For the last feature of our 30 Days of SoundKlout, I wanted to show off one of my favorite electro artists, Pretty Lights. However, instead of just throwing out my handful of favorites, I went through every one of his albums and plucked the top ones. It took an assload of time, so I hope you enjoy.

I’ll throw one out and y’all give me the rest! That’s right, a lil’ participation from you SOB’s ;)
1. DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince – Summertime
[audio:Pretty-Lights-Summertime.mp3|titles=Pretty Lights vs Summertime]Last week Pretty Lights Music announced the creation of their new label’s website, featuring Paper Diamond, Break Science & Michal Menert as the label’s first signed acts. As if that’s not enough, now PL music is releasing seven never before released remixes, appropriately named Pretty Lights Unreleased 2010 Remixes.
The seven set of songs consist of a range of genres, but where the set shines is in the classic rock remixes. Pink Floyd’s “Time” & Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle” get straight electrofied to a new millennium vibe. The rest is still an amazing set to rage to – with Derek Vincent Smith, ya can never really go wrong.
If you’d like to grab all seven songs fo free, head over to the Pretty Lights’ download section on their […]

With one of the best flows to ever hit the remix community, Timbaland tears it up with on this Pretty Lights track.
In this remix-mashup, PL samples Timbaland’s “Give It to Me” & Animotion’s pop hit, “Obsession”. I actually noticed that an instrumental in Animotion’s “Obsession” was sampled in Nine Inch Nails “Closer”, that instrumental always defined “Closer” for me. Anyone else ever notice that Just a little something I found interesting in my research into these 5 set of songs.
One thing I’ve also been wondering is why PL never released […]
[audio:http://silencenogood.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Piano-Man.mp3|titles=Piano Man (feat. Timbaland & Animotion)]Late last night I was contacted by an employee of Pretty Lights Music informing me that Electro City was, in fact, never an official album (released or otherwise).
When I first started researching this EP, I had a feeling it may not have actually been compiled by PL, but I did know this – these tracks were produced by him. So I thought I’d get ’em out there hoping to stir up a conversation and, in the least, let as many people know about these amazing set of songs as possible – not giving much thought on whether Pretty Lights or just some random fool compiled them. In the end, these tracks were too damn good to not […]
[audio:Toxic.mp3|titles=Toxic (feat. Ludacris & Yael Naim)]As we continue our countdown to New Years with Pretty Lights’ unreleased EP, Electro City, I decided to skip the third track, not because it isn’t good, but because it’s so damn good that I’m saving it for last. So, on to track #4…
When I first started listening to Pretty Lights’ “Everybody Walk”, my first reaction was “no fucking way! PL just remixed some Prince” – I always thought they would make a sick combo. Prince’s original, “The Walk”, features a group known as The Time and as fresh of a remix as it is, this shit gets hardcore 80’s (or early 90’s) in the end – ya gotta hear it to believe it (@ ~4:40). It’ good for a laugh, though, and makes the song that much better to do “The Walk” to.
Have fun with this and get ready for two even greater tracks to do “The Walk” to.. or, well, to dance to on New Years Eve!

Prince & The Time)]Pretty Light’s never released 5-track EP, titled Electro City, is turning into a 24-track behemoth of unreleased goodnass. While researching Electro City, I found another pile of unreleased tracks by PL. The validity of it is still up in the air, so i’ll continue with the original countdown and release the others if enough people hit us back with some feedback.
As for the good stuff, our next track features Yung Joc and offers up the same name as Joc’s original, “It’s Going Down”. I gotta say it’s not the best track on the EP, but the next few to come are hard to beat. Nevertheless, Pretty Lights remix of “It’s Going Down” goes well with Joc’s rhymes and what appears to be vocals originally by Shannon from “Give Me Tonight” (I still can’t believe Shazam picked that up!) When I first started obsessing about Pretty Lights earlier this year, I went and downloaded anything I could of his. One thing I forgot to do was actually listen to them all. Fortunately, I’m becoming more organized (in one way).
What I unearthed was a 5-track EP titled Electro City that Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights), apparently, never released. The version I found were unnamed tracks, but I did a little digging around and found what their names were (well, 4/5 so far).
The first track I present to you is “Better Than I’ve Ever Been” featuring Kanye West & what sounds like Prince. Make sure to check back in, they just keep getting better from here. Start preparing for the New Year :)
[audio:Better-Than.mp3|titles=Better Than I’ve Ever Been]I dunno if Pretty Lights could ever top Filling Up the City Skies, but this sure is sneaking up on it.
Glowing in the Darkest Night brings on some newly crafted tunes by our favorite hip-hop/electronic fused producer, Derek Vincent Smith.
The one thing the album’s missing is something substantially new from Smith. This may be the best release of his this year, but I know he would do well at experimenting with new […]

I wonder what people from past generations would think of music nowadays I don’t mean lyrically, but the actual sound. Take Pretty Lights for example – Derek Vincent Smith’s use of traditional instruments are only a small portion of his entire sound set.
Smith’s use of untraditional beats has set him, and many other electronic musicians, apart from conventional music. His newest album, Spilling Over Every Side, the second EP of his 2010 trilogy, is a step in a new direction, although not a leap forward from his previous work. The most noticeable difference is each song’s length, topping at close to nine minutes on “High School Art Class”. I’m not sure I prefer the lengthiness, but as he points out, there’s a “sort of dimension flip” occurring in each song.
In a document included with Spilling Over Every Side, Smith points out that he’s tried to incorporate different genres into his work, “transitioning between something pretty and organic to something heavy and electro”. Although this may be true, I don’t see Smith pushing forward and building from his previous work – it’s more of a side step. I’m sure if I was out hitting up one of his shows, this would be some awe-inspiring shit, but I expect his albums to be on the highest levels, only because I respect his craft so much.
Despite all my criticisms, it’s still phenomenally fresh, especially compared to countless other electronic albums I’ve heard over the past few months. I’ve been a big fan of his for a while, and with this latest addition, Pretty Lights continues to impress meh.
As always, you can hit up his site, PrettyLightsMusic.com, and head over to the downloads section to pick up this, and any of his other albums. Just make sure to give back the love if you enjoy his tunes – I just got a t-shirt form his store and it’s quality. Or go to the North Coast Festival this upcoming Labor Day weekend, and show him some support. Plus you might see me there (if you’re so lucky).
